Did you know batteries and electronics can start fires or even explode?
Don’t discard electronics and rechargeable batteries in the trash or recycling.
Don’t store old electronics or batteries for long periods of time. They can break down increasing their risk of starting a fire.
Don’t attempt to remove embedded or built-in rechargeable batteries. Recycle the whole device.
Tape the terminals, and place each battery in a clear plastic bag to prevent sparking or explosions.
Damaged batteries should be placed in a container with sand or cat litter until they can be safely taken to a disposal facility.
The Ottumwa/Wapello County Recycling Center is able to take rechargeable and lead acid batteries anytime we’re open. Monday – Friday 7am – 4pm, and Saturday 7am – Noon. If you have questions call the Recycling Center at 641-683-0685.
